Vocab words

Agora- in ancient Greece is a gathering place for assembly, marketplace. center of athletic, artistic, spiritual, and political life in the city/state (esp. Athens).

Polis- city state in ancient Greece, especially as considered in its ideal form for philosophical purposes. Discussing very important matters. Political entities ruled by their bodies of citizens.

The importance of the year 508 BC to the ancient Greeks- the ancient Greek civilization ended after the introduction of Democracy. First time people had revolted against their rulers.

Socrates- ancient Athenian philosopher. He engaged in dialogue with others in attempt to reach understanding and ethical concepts by exposing and dispelling error. Charged with introducing strange gods and corrupting the young. he committed suicide as required.

The death of Socrates- he corrupted the youth in Athens, and telling them about strange gods so in the painting he is forced to commit suicide by drinking poison hemlock. He takes his death sentence, doesn't try to escape to show loyalty to Athenian Democracy.

The Socratic method- also known as the Socratic Debate or Elenchus, named after classical Greek philosopher Socratic. It is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals.

What the ancient Greeks meant if they called you an idiot- if you did not vote in ancient Greece, it doesn't matter who you vote for, you would be publicly mark and labeled an idiot.
