Grids, Time Zones, and a quiz

Tomorrow I have a quiz that I didn't find out about until today. It is one North American and South American countries. I know a lot of the South American countries because for Spanish I had to know the countries. I will have to study a lot tonight fir the quiz tomorrow. We took notes on geography today in class. We learned about geography, some questions are where are people and activities found on Earth? Why are they found there? A map is a two dimensional or flat scale model of the Earth's surface (or a portion of it). A test answer is the art and science of mapmaking is cartography. Eratosthenes (195 BCE) is a cartographer of Ancient Greece. Maps serve two purposes. As a reference tool to identify an object's absolute and relative location. As a communications tool to convey the distribution of human activities or physical features.

My New Class and Situation

Today was my first day in Honors Human Geo 102. I left my Honors 101 class to fit in my new schedule. We took notes on Situation. Situation is the location of a place relative to other places. It helps us find an unfamiliar place by comparing its location with a familiar one. It helps us understand the importance of a location. An example is some places are important because they are accessible to other places due to their location. We identify important buildings , streets, and other landmarks to direct people to their desired location. We also talked about how most manufactured things are made in third world countries where the people that make it get paid a lot less. They get a paid about 300 a month if they go to work everyday, and they don't get insurance or sick days. We get paid at least about 2,400 a month, plus insurance and sick days. That is why America doesn't make as much manufactured goods because it would cost a lot more than just letting other countries do it. That is what I learned today in class.

Test Return

Today in class we got our test back from last week. I did better than I thought I did. I got a 96 because I missed number thirteen and a quote on the essay. Number thirteen was name two words with the same word origin as polis. I did not understand what he meant by that so I just named two Greek words that we learned. I put arete and agora which were wrong, you had to out words with polis in it. Some examples are Annapolis, metropolis, police, politics, and poll. Now I know for the exam in December. I got the extra credit right but I got the spelling wrong even though I thought I was right, the spelling I did was in my notes. I put Donolly instead of Denali. In the first essay I forgot one of the quotes that was Socrates defense, so I just put the one I knew and unfortunately I got a point off. I think overall I did good on the test.

Peters Map and Mercators Map

A Peters Map is a more accurate map of our world. It shows correct sizes of the continents, countries, islands, and oceans. The latitude lines in the middle of the map are big and as they get smaller as you go up or down. The lines of latitude get smaller because as you go up on a globe it gets smaller. It is the same thing if you go down. A Mercator's Map is what you were taught on when you were little. The lines stay the same width as you go up or down on a Mercator's. It makes it seem as if America is only a little smaller than Africa, Brazil. It also seems that America is the same size as Canada when Canada is only a little bigger than America. Africa and Brazil are much bigger than America which it doesn't seem like that on a Mercator's Map. Also on both maps America is in the right hand corner because it makes us seem like the best and most powerful country. You could cut the map in half and put America in the top left and it would still be a correct map. We probably would never make maps like that because it might make Europe or Asia seem more powerful because they are in the right hand corner instead of us.

Maps

In class today we learned about all different kinds of maps. There is one called a Peters map and Mercator's map. A Mercators map is the normal one we see in most classrooms. This is the map you were taught on when you were little and it isn't is accurate as you think. North America is in the left corner, at the top, and as big as Canada when America is much smaller. It was made like that because people thought that the bigger you were the better people thought you were but no matter where your from you think your country is the best. Africa is only a little bigger than America on this map so we look better when Africa is double our size. I always thought Greenland was very big but I learned that it is 14 times smaller than Africa. So on the Peter's Map Africa and Greenland are the right size, and America is only as big as it should be. A Peter's Map is what school's should use to teach kids that bigger isn't always better.

Test Day

Today I took a test in human geography. I think I did a good job and got the questions right. For the first essay question I think I did good and got the main points that were in the PowerPoint. I feel like I explained myself enough to get it right. I didn't like the second essay question as much because it was an opinion and I'm not very good at that kind since there is really no right or wrong answer. I still always seem to get the opinion questions wrong. I don't think the test was hard but, I wouldn't change it at all. I studied Wednesday and Thursday night for this test so hopefully I did good. I haven't taken a Social Studies test or human geo test in a long time so it was different. We didn't do much in my last Social Studies class in 7th grade or 8th grade except cross word puzzles, worksheets, and we watched a lot of movies.

Socrates

Socrates as a young an worked as a stonemason and then fought heroically in the Peloponnesian War. He has a working class background and battlefield experiences that may have shaped how he views the world. He met with young students outside of the agora and his method was to ask them a series of questions to determine underlying belief ad extent of their knowledge. This eventually lead to the scientific method. He was charged with 2 crimes and went to trial. Corruption of Athens youth and impiety which is not believing in the gods of the state. His defense in trial was, "It's my job to be gadfly to the lazy, sluggish horse that is Athens." "I should actually be rewarded with free dinners for life." A jury of 500 men found him guilty. He was sentenced to death by drinking poison hemlock. He had the opportunity to escape before his death. Guards were going to try to get him out because many people actually liked him, and he was popular. He refused, he wanted to prove his loyalty to the Athenian Democracy.

Vocab words

Agora- in ancient Greece is a gathering place for assembly, marketplace. center of athletic, artistic, spiritual, and political life in the city/state (esp. Athens).

Polis- city state in ancient Greece, especially as considered in its ideal form for philosophical purposes. Discussing very important matters. Political entities ruled by their bodies of citizens.

The importance of the year 508 BC to the ancient Greeks- the ancient Greek civilization ended after the introduction of Democracy. First time people had revolted against their rulers.

Socrates- ancient Athenian philosopher. He engaged in dialogue with others in attempt to reach understanding and ethical concepts by exposing and dispelling error. Charged with introducing strange gods and corrupting the young. he committed suicide as required.

The death of Socrates- he corrupted the youth in Athens, and telling them about strange gods so in the painting he is forced to commit suicide by drinking poison hemlock. He takes his death sentence, doesn't try to escape to show loyalty to Athenian Democracy.

The Socratic method- also known as the Socratic Debate or Elenchus, named after classical Greek philosopher Socratic. It is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals.

What the ancient Greeks meant if they called you an idiot- if you did not vote in ancient Greece, it doesn't matter who you vote for, you would be publicly mark and labeled an idiot.

Message to Garcia

Today in class we finished our story a message to Garcia. It takes place in the Spanish American War in Cuba. President McKinley needs to get a message to Garcia. He asks Rowan to deliver the message and of course he does it. Rowan goes and delivers the message to Garcia on a jungle island. Rowan does lots of things without question. He is a great role model he doesn't try to get around it by asking if this is really his job like some people did in the story. I think people should look up to Rowan. There are many people in this world who would just like to do nothing or make someone else do it. Sometimes people will complain and act like they have the hardest job when there are much harder jobs then theirs. The people in who looked in encyclopedias felt they were children in a sweatshop. I think we can all be a little lazy sometimes but we should do our best not to. We need to just push through tests and work because at least we are getting an education.

High School Hardships and "A Message To Garcia"

The hardest part of high school is managing time, homework, school, and sports. After school I have field hockey until 5:30 and I get home around six. Some days I will come home and go straight to another practice until eight. Then after that I will be starting homework around nine. I will have to try to do homework before field hockey so I can get all my homework done which may be hard since it's not a lot of time. I will really have to learn to manage time so I can be rested every day.

Also, we read about a man named Rowan who can find a man named Garcia. Garcia is usually well hidden away in some jungle island. Rowan will do anything to find him and give him his letter. He didn't even ask where Garcia was because he could find him. Rowan is such a good person that his "form should be cast in a deathless bronze and the statue placed in every college in the land.

My First Day

My first day at John Carroll was very different from middle school, but fun. One of my favorite things was seeing some of my friends that I hadn't seen after a long summer. Another one of my favorite things is that my advisor keeps the school therapy dog in her office. All the kids in my advisory seem nice too. My least favorite part of my day was having to find all my classes in 5 minutes, make sure I have all my books, and get my locker open. I was going to put away one of my textbooks, but I couldn't get my locker open in time, so I didn't. I think I got the hang of it now and can open it on the first or second try. I don't like my seat because it is a little harder to read the board. I think if I moved up one row it would be much easier to read the writing on the board, but I will sit anywhere you would like me to.

Dear Future Laura....
