Essay

Today in class we took the essay part of our exam. We had to write a five paragraph essay on one of the three topics. I choose the one with the population pyramids. The question was:
The population pyramids below represent two countries at different stages of the demographic transition and economic development. Explain the demographic characteristics of each country below with respect to the demographic transition model. Describe potential issues both countries could face in the future if their population pyramids remain the same. Discuss possible solutions to each country’s population concerns. I think I did pretty good on my essay and answered all the questions properly. Hopefully I wrote enough which I think I did because I don't know what else I would have added to it. I really hope I get a good grade on it because I want to do well on my exams.

Pre essay

For class tomorrow I have to write an essay on a topic of my choosing. This is my essay that I wrote for practice and to take notes from for my index card. Here it is.

The population pyramids shown are describing the population of two countries and the future of their population. The pyramids will be described by writing which demographic transition stage each population pyramid is in. Then its demographic characteristics and potential issues that the countries could face in the future if their population didn’t change will be addressed. Once these problems have been addressed,  a solution will be found for them to help keep their country existing.
The first pyramid is the one that looks sloped triangle shape. The bottom is very wide and gets smaller as it goes up. Around age 45 it drops a lot and gets very small at the 50 and up. This is showing that they probably are a poor country and  don’t have good health care because the older people get the less there are of them.  Also, there are a lot of children which were used to help on the farms and the more children the less work it is to manage a farm. In the future if this population pyramid doesn’t change they will have lots of children that will keep coming into the reproductive age and those kids now adults will have more children which will result in overpopulation.
The second pyramid is the small one. The pre reproductive is small, gets a little bigger as it goes to reproductive, and then it gets a little smaller as it goes to post reproductive. This is showing that this country is post industrial and more women are having  less children. They are having less children due to reasons like birth control, jobs, and college educations. They may only have between none to two children. When those children become older they will have less or the same children and the population will decrease even more as the years go on.
The future population of the first pyramid will grow very much in the first few years. There are very many children being born, once they reach reproductive years they will have the same amount of children for reasons like helping on the farm. The population will grow but you can slow down the growth by providing more information to the people living there. Another idea is providing birth control, more jobs for women, letting them do more besides raise children, and run the house. The second population pyramid will slowly decrease because the less children that are born will be raised to have less children and may eventually decide to not have any when they reach reproductive age. Ways to increase population is to encourage people to have more children, and encourage more immigrants to come live in the country.
The population pyramid will eventually struggle with their numbers of people and could rapidly increase or decrease in the coming years. There are many good solutions to help these countries not become overpopulated or underpopulated. If they follow these ideas and make an effort to keep the population at a steady amount they will thrive in coming years.

Essay Preparation Day

Today in class we went to his blog and then to the study guide for the exam. We are writing an essay and then remembering as much as we can for Friday. We use this to study for it so we can write a good essay and have an idea of what to write. It would be hard if we just got a bunch of essay questions and then had to write one with not much recent information. Also on the paper is an outline of what the scantron test will be like and what to study for it. It also has another outline for the essay with five paragraphs. I choose Option B with the population pyramids. It seems the easiest. I will describe each pyramid by writing which demographic transition stage each one is in and describe the economic development. Then I will explain the demographic characteristics of the models and describe potential issues that the countries could face in the future if their population didn’t change. After that I’ll find solutions to these problems.

Demographic Transition Test

Today in class I walked in and the lights were on. The lights in this classroom are very bright and there are to many of them. I am not used to coming in this class and it being this bright. I did not like it at all, I'd rather it be dark. So I turned on the other switch which only has four lights instead of five. Then we took the test, it wasn't to hard. I think I got most of them write except maybe three. The one with the equation were you had to find the mistake, I did not know what it was so I guessed. I also wasn't sure about the questions were you had to name to countries in stage five. I knew one but I didn't know another one. After we took the test we got to turn the lights off and work on our blog. That was it for the class and I found out I got one wrong already.

Demographic transitions quiz prep day

Today in class we talked more about Demographic Transitions. We copied a chart for people who are ore visual. The chart is about our world in data. It looked like the picture down at the bottom. It says stage 1s birth rate is high and death rate is high. Its natural increase is stable or slow increase. For stage 2 the birth rate is high and the death rate will fall rapidly. The natural increase is very rapid increase. In stage 3 the birth rate is falling and the death rate falls more slowly. The natural increase is increase slows down. In stage 4 the birth rate is low and the death rate is low. The natural increase is stable or slow increase. In stage 5 the birth rate is very low and the death rate is low. The natural increase is stable or slow decrease.  We re watched the Khan Academy video to review.

Video Assignment

In class we had a substitute. We did an assignment were we watch three videos and write three facts about each of them.

Demographic Transitions:

1. States that a population will eventually stop growing when the country transitions from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates stabilizing the population.
2. Stage one country has high birth rates because of limited birth control and the economic benefit of having more people to work. Have high death rates because of poor nutrition or disease.
3. The Malthusian Theorem says we might run out of resources and then there will be a global food shortage. 1 billion out of 7 billion suffer from malnutrition and hunger.

Why Populations Grow and the Demographic Transition Model:
1. One way to measure population growth is by calculating the doubling time which is the length of time it takes for a population to double in size. D= 70/Growth rate(r)
2. The two factors that influence population change is rate of natural increase and net migration.
3. Stage 1 is associated with the least economically developed countries in the world today.

The Demographic Transition Theory:
1. Since agricultural revolution 8,000 years ago to industrial revolution which started in 1750, the worlds population grew by only 67,000 people every year.
2. Now we gain 67,000 people every six to seven hours. Fertility rates are much higher than death rates in less industrialized countries we are having expediential growth.
3. There is enough food on the planet for everyone if we would just distribute it evenly. It is still unclear if industrialization can stop overpopulation with our consumption rates.

My favorite video was the Demographic Transition Theory. I was very detailed with good information. It helped me understand more about this topic. The lady was a PhD so she is a reliable source.

The Demographic Transition

Today in class we learned about demographic transition. Demographic transition is a process of change in a society's population from high crude birth and death rates and low rate of natural increase to a condition of low crude birth and death rates, low rate of natural increase, and higher total population. Stage 1 is low growth. The low growth is caused by very high CBR, very high CDR, and very low NIR. Stage 2 is high growth. The high growth is caused by high CBR, rapidly declining CDR, very high NIR. Stage 3 is moderate growth. The moderate growth is caused by rapidly declining CBR, moderately declining CDR, and moderate NIR. Stage 4 is low growth. Low growth is caused by very low CBR, low or slightly increasing CDR, and zero or negative NIR. Those are the four stages of demographic transitions. We got our quizzes back and I got a 88%. Its not the best but its not bad. I only got 3 wrong.

Quiz Day

Today we had a shorter class because it is an H day and we had a prayer service. It went over the scheduled time so we had our classes made even shorter. So we came in and studied for 10 minutes of class to prepare for the test. It was on the 5 major religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism. Christianity was the easiest because that's our religion and we learn about it every day. Islam wasn't to hard there were a few facts that took me a little while to remember but it wasn't to difficult. Buddhism and Hinduism were the hardest. I kept getting them mixed up. They are kind of similar and some questions I could just not remember at all no matter how much I studied them. Judaism wasn't to hard because we learn a little about the religion in class because they are similar and they are in the Bible to. I think I did okay on the quiz, at least a B.

Test Review Day and Stories

Today in class we were told different stories from Mr. Schick when he was in film directing. He told us a story about what happened when he was in his second commercial. He was in a line of cars in the passenger seat and there as a helicopter in front filming. They were filming all the cars turning their lights on a once. They put a helicopter on a little wheels to move it to the perfect position and its so light two people could lift it. It was still on the wheels when they turned the helicopter on to start filming and it started turning. The back blade was spinning sideways toward his car and it shattered the windshield. He was wearing a big coat because it was so cold so the glass didn't effect him. He also knew the kid from Home Alone.

Five Major Religions

Today in class we learned about the five major religions. They are Christianity, Islamic, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism. The first one I'll talk is Christianity and number of adherents: around 2.2 billion (largest in the world), you call them: Christians, their geographic location: Europe, the Americas, southern Africa. The next one is Islam, the number of adherents: 1.5 billion (second largest), you
call them: Muslims, their geographic location: Indonesia, Middle East, north Africa. The next one I'll talk about is Hinduism the number of adherents: 1.1 billion (third largest), you call them: Hindus, their geographic location: India, Nepal. Next is Buddhism, the number of adherents: 500 mill. to 1.5 billion, you call them: Buddhists, their geographic location: southeast Asia, China, Nepal, Japan, (there are 1.2 million Buddhists in the United States). The last one is Judaism, the number of adherents: 14 - 18 million (ninth), you call them: Jews, their geographic location: Israel (6.4 million, 75.4%) and US (5.3 - 7 million, 1.7% - 2.6%).

Test Return and New Unit

In class we got our tests back and checked them. I got a 95/100 on it, I was very surprised. I didn't think I did that well on it. I got two wrong. One was, 90% of the population growth in the world is taking place in certain regions. Which of the following is NOT one of these regions. a. Africa b. Latin America. c. Europe d. East Asia. e. South Asia. I said East Asia because I read the questions wrong and was kind of confused what is was asking. I also was thinking of Japan how they aren't having a lot of kids. The right answer is Europe which makes sense. The other question I got wrong was, of these four countries, it has the highest birth AND death rate. I said India but the answer is Nigeria. Now we are studying the 5 major religions for a test on Friday. We have Thursday to get notes and learn it.

Test Day

Today in class we took our test on population, migration, and population pyramids. I think I did okay, better than last time. There were definitely some questions I wasn't sure about. There were multiple choice mainly, some population pyramids you had to identify, and few questions were you had to pick from a few different countries and match them to the correct description. The population pyramid section was a little hard because to of them were very similar. I couldn't figure out which of the countries and what there population would be like. I tried to use the total population to help me figure out what country went with the pyramid. I think most of the multiple choice was easy except a few I wasn't sure if I got right. Overall I think I did pretty well and hopefully I got a good grade. Also everybody was here in class which is good and we will get to check them soon.

Test Review and Jeapordy

Today in class we reviewed for the test Monday. It will be on Population Pyramids and the terms we learned. We re watched the population pyramid video we first watched a few weeks ago. The first time I watched it I didn't really understand it. Now that we have learned so much I understood the video and it made sense. I wrote down a few things that will be on the test. I starred the important things and wrote down some extra facts that could be important. I will study my notes and watch the video again this weekend. After we talked about the video and watched it we got on the topic of jeopardy some how. We then watched the latest episode of Jeopardy, it was shorten so we could watch it in 15 minutes. It was the tournament of champions. This was the last group to make the champions.

Finished projects

In class we finished our project presentations. We had one group and they did Italy and Tanzania. They talked about how Italy has a lot of people under the poverty line. A solution was reducing taxation that could help a business owner free up their work force and employ more people. They did a good job ending it. I don't know if they knew there material that well, but it was still good. After that Mr. Schick said that we are going to get a paper with our groups name and ours and give each other number grades. We would each get our own paper and no one else would see it. He would look at the scores and use it to help him determine our grade. It one person consistently got the lowest grade then they probably didn't do much work. If someone consistently gets the highest than they probably did a good job. I didn't like doing it but I actually tried to be honest about my grades. Hopefully got a good grade.

Presenting Day

In class today we presented our projects on problems and solutions for our countries. We heard lots of different countries and their problems and solutions. I thought our presentation went pretty well and we hit all the points. I think our power point was good and had the information we needed. I think we did a good job presenting it and we didn't look at the board to much and knew our information. We had some different points for a country. Then we said the pros and cons for each country, so why our points were good and why they could be bad. We got into discussion about our point when we said a solution for the drug problems was to ramp up the production but we didn't mean it as it was a good idea, it was just a solution. We didn't hear all the presentations so we will finish tomorrow.

Project Day 2

Today in class we worked on our project again. We picked Germany and Japan. We had a problem for Columbia and part of a solution for it. Then today we finished it and put a finished solution on the PowerPoint. After looking for a long time on every tab we finally found a problem for Germany that was good. We then found a solution which was pretty easy to do. We organized all our information on a slide show and we had on box with problem, an arrow, pointing to a box with the solution. Our problem for Germany is that the German government has taken in over 1,000,000 migrants/refugees since 2015. That is a lot of people to handle at once especially if they just keep coming in like this. Our solution is for the government to take a break from allowing so many immigrants/refugees into the country to give people time to assimilate and get used to the new culture/etc. to prevent conflicts between conflicting backgrounds. As well as to prevent overpopulation. It will also give the economy a break and help the unemployment rate. That is what we have and we will be presenting it tomorrow.

Project Day 1

Today in class we started a new project. We have to pick two countries and find a problem in each and solve it with a solution. There were four captains picked and they went to the front of the room. They each took turns writing on paper who they wanted in their group. It was done this way so that nobody knew who was picked first or last by each person and no one would feel left out. Once they picked, which seemed to have taken a long time, we got together in our groups. We picked what countries we wanted and told them to Mr. Schick. After that he explained what we should do and said we should use the CIA World Factbook website. Our group is me, Sam, Karlee, Claire, and Andrew. We chose Germany and Columbia. Our problem for Columbia is that. Their GDP is bad and the only reason they even have one is because they are all drug dealers. We are their biggest customer. Our solution is to ramp up the drug production and keep selling them to rich americans who then ruin their lives by getting addicted to drugs. Or they could stop selling drugs and grow a lot of crops instead like coffee, flowers, and corn. (third largest coffee exporter and second largest cut flower exporter). That is all we have so far.

Class Review

We were suppose to have a pop quiz in class but Mr. Schick wanted us to look good for our parent teavher conference. Since it is the beginning of the quarter we started at zero so if we bomb our test then we could have like a 40 percent as our grade. So he didn't give us the pop quizwhich was nice of him. Instead he went over some important questions that would have been on our quiz. He asked a some questions like key terms, number answers, and other stuff. He said the definition of key terms like crude birth rate, crude death rate, fertility rate and what number it has to be for it to replace, life expectancy, what country imports the most oil, and what country has the highest birth and death rate. Crude birth rate is number of births per 1000. Crude death rate is number of deaths per 1000. Fertility rate has to be at least 2.1 for the population to not decrease, the two children replace the parents exactly.

In Class Population Assignment

Japan: There net migration rate is zero. This means that there is the same amount of people leaving and coming into the country. It interesting because they can only increase their population by having more kids, which doesn't seem to be happening. They aren't having a lot of kids because women now wan to work and have careers. There population will be hard to keep up.

Greenland: The Net Migration Rate is -6. This mean that more people are leaving the country than coming in. It is only -6 so that is not a lot but their population will decrease because of this. The people might be leaving because of the climate and their aren't that many people living their. Its harder to find opportunities their unlike America because it so under developed.

Lebanon: Has the highest Net Migration Rate at -40.30. There are a lot of people leaving, almost no one coming in. The conditions are bad because of all the past wars they have had. One just recently ended and I don't think they have had enough time to recover from all the wars that kept happening.
Everyone is leaving hoping for a better life in Europe.

Cook Islands: They have a small population. It is 9,038, they are very low on the country comparison chart. Their Net Migration Rate is -32.3 so they have a lot of people leaving and not enough coming in. There Fertility Rate is 2.16 so it is just enough to replace. They have 8.6 deaths per 1000. They are ranked 75 in the country comparison. I think there population will not change much or if it does change it will not be rapid.

Russia: They have a big population for a big country. They are number six with 142,122,776. There Net Migration Rate is 1.7, they have more people coming in than out. Their population won't go down because of that. They are in the top ten for highest death rate, it is 13.40 deaths per 1000. The population can definitely go down and the population pyramid shows more older people than younger. The fertility rate is 1.61 and it has to be at least 2.1 for the population to stay the same. Their population will be decreasing.

Population Pyramids

Brazil: Will grow slowly.population pyramid Answer: grow slowly then decrease slowly.

Spain: Will decline.population pyramid Answer: decline slowly.

Greece: Will decline slowly. population pyramid Answer: decline quickly.

The Bahamas: Will increase quickly.population pyramid Answer: grow quickly.

Aruba: Will increase.population pyramid Answer: will increase for a while than decrease quickly.

Quiz and End of First Quarter

Today we took a ten question quiz on the Hans Rosling video 200 years in 4 minutes. We watched the video again and before taking the quiz. The questions were on a PowerPoint and we filled the answers in on our paper. Some of the questions were what was the y axis called and what is the x axis called. Another was what two events occurred that caused population to go down and what is the worst country according to Hans. It is the end of the quarter and I hope to finish with all A's and I think I did get all A's. That was my goal for the first quarter even though it doesn't really matter I still wanted all A's. For the next quarter I hope to do better like still A's but maybe higher percentages or stay the same. We also have to take our exam which I'm nervous about because I am not a good test taker. I just want to pass all my exams or get a little above a passing grade on all them. I will have to make sure I stay organized until then so I am prepared for the test and so I can easily study for everything. I don't need to worry about them yet but I have to remember that they are coming soon. I can't believe that I am done already with my first quarter of high school. It has gone by so fast already.

Hans Rosling Video

We watched a video called Hans Rosling 200 years in four minutes. He had a chart with years on the y axis, from 25 up to 75 years. The x axis is money up to $40,000 GDP per capita. In the left bottom corner was poor and sick. The right top corner is healthy and rich. 200 years ago life expectancy was 40. The United Kingdom and the Netherlands were the best off living wise until a little past 40 years. Asia and Africa didn't participate in industrial evolution. In 1948 countries were spread all across the graph. In 1948 Africa was still at the bottom. Provinces in China like Shanghai is doing as good as Italy even though China was much farther down. Age, trade, green technology, and peace will help all countries reach healthy rich corner, this is what Hans Rosling thinks. Unfortunately this has not happened.

More notes on the Population Pyramid

We watched the video again that I watched yesterday. This time we stopped more and explained in more detail what the video what saying. In my last blog I said that each row was four years but it is actually five. On the Population Pyramid men are always on the left and women are always on the right. I will now describe the Demographic Transition. If a one of the graphs is a triangle then the population will grow quickly. It is considered pre- industrialized. If it looks like a diamond but the point on the sides are near the bottom then the population will grow slowly. It is considered industrialized. If it looks like a diamond but the side points are at the top then the population will decline. It is then considered post industrialized. The triangle means is will grow faster because if they are pre- industrialized then they don't have birth control so they have more kids. The industrialized grows slowly because parents only have about two children which is just enough to replace the parents. The post industrialized has more older people than younger so they aren't replacing the people that are dying with babies. That is how they will decrease in population.

Notes on Population Pyramid

We watched two videos on pyramid population. I will describe how a population pyramid works. It is split into two sides, one female and one male. Each row is years of age. Row one is years zero through four. Row two is five through nine. Row three is ten through fourteen and so on. It goes up to 100 plus years. Years zero through fourteen is pre productive and that is three rows. Years 15-44 is reproductive and is 6 rows. Years 45-100 plus is post reproductive and that has twelve rows. The pyramid is a powerful predictor of future population trends. In Japan their population will keep decreasing because more people are in their post reproductive age. Their are less in the reproductive age and many people are only having one child. Rwanda will be a fast growing country, their are a lot of people in the pre reproductive age so their are going to be many babies born soon. Canada's population will increase but slowly because most people are in the reproductive age. Once they are gone there won't be as many people going from pre reproductive to reproductive. The population will grow but slowly.

Test Day

In class today we took a test on population and settlement. I think I did okay. I think I got a few wrong but not that many. There were a few questions with like exact numbers of a population or something and I had no idea what they were. The front page wasn't to hard except I didn't get to one question because I ran out of time. It was how many barrels of oil does the United States make or something like that and I didn't find it on time. The vocab page wasn't to hard either but some of the words at the top I didn't know what they meant. But there was only one question I really wasn't sure about. I made a quizlet with the vocab words to help me study so I think I knew most of them. The next page I may have gotten one or two wrong. I feel more confident on that page then I did earlier. On the last page I used different countries and gave two examples, which I'm not sure was enough or not. The bonus questions I had no idea what it was even asking or talking about so one of them I gave a random number and the other I was so clueless I didn't know whether to out a number, word or country. I hope I did good on the test because I have a 90% on this class and I don't want it to go a B.

Test Tomorrow on World Population

Today we went over test material for tomorrow. We reviewed slides and guessed what would be on the test. We were told the format which includes going on the CIA World Factbook Cite, answering 15 questions, multiple choice, and answering vocab. We need to bring a fully charged laptop for the questions and we get 20 minutes to answer all of them. Then we do the rest of the test. I underlined in my notes what might be important for the test, and things I should memorize. Some terms I need to know are: life expectancy, Net Migration Rate (TFR), push forces, pull forces, crude birth rate, crude death rate, Rate of Natural Increase (RNI), net immigration, net emigration, death rate, and infant mortality rate. I will study everything and hopefully do well on the test. I want to do well since it is the last test of the quarter.

CIA World Factbook

Today in class we reviewed and discussed all the questions we answered yesterday. I learned a lot of things I didn't know or even think of with this site. For example technology, I figured most people in the world used technology because of how advanced its gotten. It is also very easy for us to immediately get access to the internet and things like that so I assumed most other people did too. Only 76.2% of people use internet. I thought it would be high 80% or low 90% even. I knew not everyone because there are lots of people in Africa and India who don't even have electricity. These days technology seems to be growing fast so I thought far more people would have it. I also didn't realize how much more our GDP is compared to a country like Nigeria is We have a little over 50,000 more than them which is crazy. Our GDP doesn't seem very high compared to Luxembourg which is 105,000. They are a smaller country with less people so that is probably why there's is so much higher. It is still crazy how different each is just because of your surrounds when you could all be working just as hard.
